Swedish Army Music Band

Remembering the teacher's words to breathe with the stomach, to rely on the air stream and focus on the pitch of the next note, I prepared myself for the upcoming beautiful solo at the Hasselbacken restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden where we - the Swedish Army Music Band - were holding an evening concert under a clear, blue sky. Earlier that day, we'd been executing one of our more prominent duties - to provide the musical framework of the change of guards at the Royal Swedish Castle in front of a packed Castle courtyard and, remarkably that day, for the King Carl XVI Gustaf Bernadotte himself. It had been a hot day and I was dehydrated but my teacher's tips worked: a full, rich sound of glory spread over the restaurant patio as my family relaxed and enjoyed being more and more at peace with the sound of the French horn.
