Improving Crop Yield and Water Productivity by Ecological Sanitation and Water Harvesting in South Africa

Sustainable intensification of smallholder agriculture is a critical issue for addressing food security. In this article, we analyze current crop constraints and some exciting water and nutrient enhancement strategies across South Africa. I wrote it together with colleagues at Eawag, ETH Zurich, Alberta Innovates, NTU Singapore, and University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. It is published in the high-profile scientific journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Improved SWAT Model Performance with Time-Dynamic Voronoi Tessellation of Climatic Input Data in Southern Africa

This scientific article, published in JAWRA in February 2012, presents a new method to prepare climatic input data for hydrological models. The method significantly improves disharge simulations. I developed it together with colleagues at Eawag, ETH Zurich, and AWRI.

Doctoral dissertation: The Potential Impacts of Enhanced Soil Moisture and Soil Fertility on Smallholder Crop Yields in Southern Africa

As the grand finale of my four years of Ph.D. at Eawag and ETH Zurich, I finalized and published my doctoral dissertation in June 2011. It sums up and reflects on the results emanating from the study of water and nutrient conditions and potentials in smallholder agriculture in Southern Africa.

Potential impacts of water harvesting and ecological sanitation on crop yield, evaporation and river flow regimes in the Thukela River basin, South Africa

This scientific article was published in May 2011 in the Agricultural Water Management journal during my Ph.D. at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). I wrote it together with colleagues at Eawag, the Alberta Water Research Institute, the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Understanding consumption-related sucralose emissions — A conceptual approach combining substance-flow analysis with sampling analysis

I was part of a team headed by Tina-Simone Schmid Neset looking at emissions and sources of sucralose (a synthetic sweetener in food products) in Sweden. It was published in 2010 in the journal Science of The Total Environment.
